Wireless Load Monitoring for Stage & Rigging

Music festivals and concerts require large stages which must not only support musicians, but the impressive lighting and sound systems expected from high profile events. The use of telemetry strain gauge acquisition modules in conjunction with a wireless radio handheld display allows continuous monitoring of a structure.

The Problem:

The staging structures often support heavy loads at heights of well over 7m. Monitoring the load and movement of these structures, especially under high winds, is paramount in order to guarantee the safety of those on stage and the audience.

The Wireless Solution:

A wireless load monitoring system can offer an easy-fit solution allowing engineers to instantly know the forces being exerted on a lighting bar, for example. The BroadWeigh load monitoring system uses a Crosby safety bow shackle and high accuracy wireless load pin to suspend the lighting bar which transmits the load data via 2.4Ghz radio to a wireless load cell indicator to an operative on the stage floor below. The wireless indicator displays the exact weight being exerted on each of the load shackles. The BroadWeigh Wireless Load Monitoring system can transmit data from up to 200 metres (650 ft) and offers low profile wireless shackles. The system also maintains a 5:1 safety factor, is accurate to 0.1% of nominal load and has up to 1500 hour battery life.

For logging load data to a PC, a set of 16 BroadWeigh wireless load shackles could be used to monitor key points on a stage system such as chain hoist locations, grid hanging points and tensioned steel tie lines.

The values from all 16 wireless load cells can be gathered using a single PC running the BroadWeigh logging software. All data is transmitted to the PC wirelessly via a USB base station. Each input could be individually zeroed allowing riggers to monitor not only the total loads but also the changes in load during adverse weather conditions as well as allowing a user to monitor the inertial effects of multiple moving-head lights. This can ensure the structure stands firm during the wettest and wildest of festivals.
