ATEX refers to the EC directive 94/9/EG (ATEX 95) and provides the technical requirements for equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially Explosive Atmospheres.
ATEX is derived from the French term "Atmosphere Explosible" and the new directive replaces the various National certification schemes that were previously in use by each of the EC member states.
